Blaine also held Kurt tight, at least as long as the hug lasted. He sat down on a chair in the kitchen and while Kurt went through the cupboards looking for tea, he absentmindedly started playing the tablecloth. He looked up when Kurt asked him if he had talked to his mom. A nod followed. “I did. After my dad had said that I went to my room and then she came up to me and thanked me and hugged me. When she left my room, I heard my dad yelling at her for babying me…” He was shaking and shrugged, feeling horrible. “It’s just like… I’m gay and he can’t accept it. Therefore he uses every possible opportunity to tear me down.” He sighed and looked down at their hands being laced together. He reluctantly let go and rubbed his hand that was slightly red from where his dad had pulled him by the wrist.

“See, your mom knows you love her,” Kurt told him soothingly. “I hate that your dad treats you like that though. You can always come stay with me if you need a break from him.” He was about to add something else, but the kettle began to whistle, signaling that the water was ready for Blaine’s tea. Quickly, Kurt prepared the drink, adding milk, sugar, and honey to sweeten it before handing it to Blaine. “This should make you feel better, love. My mom always used to make me tea when I had a bad day at school,” he recalled sadly. “We would have tea parties with my stuffed animals and she would make finger sandwiches.”

Blaine took the mug of tea from her, mouthing a smile. He took a sip and tasted the sweetness and oddly enough, it made him smile. Listening to Kurt’s story about his mom also made Blaine smile. “I would have loved your mom, I just know it.” He said with a nod and with his good arm, he reached over and took Kurt’s hand and brought it up to his lips, where Blaine kissed it gently. “I love you, boo. Thank you for being you.” Blaine wasn’t much of a romantic and he was much better at singing his feelings, but Kurt opened something inside of him he didn’t knew he had. He took another sip while caressing Kurt’s fingers and he sighed contently.

Kurt wrapped his arms around Blaine tightly, feeling a surge of anger toward Blaine’s father. “That’s horrible, B,” Kurt whispered softly, ushering his boyfriend back inside, steering him toward the kitchen. Instantly, he began searching the cupboards for Mrs. Anderson’s box of tea bags. They had some time before they had to go and right now, making sure that Blaine was okay was more important. “Don’t listen to him, Blaine. You know it’s not true and I hate that he would make you think so.” After setting the water to boil, Kurt sat at the table, lacing his fingers through Blaine’s. “Did you talk to your mom at all? You’ve mentioned that tulips are her favorite. Surely she appreciates them just as much as the roses…”

Blaine also held Kurt tight, at least as long as the hug lasted. He sat down on a chair in the kitchen and while Kurt went through the cupboards looking for tea, he absentmindedly started playing the tablecloth. Kurt hugged Blaine back, leaning down to kiss him softly. Though it looked like Blaine was trying to hide it, he was clearly upset about something. “It’s all up to you,” he told him, giving Blaine the opportunity to tell him what was wrong. We just have to leave before the florist closes. I always stop to get flowers for her,” he explained. He could tell from the lack of light and sound inside the Anderson home that Blaine’s parents must have gone out. That has to be what’s bothering him. Something to do with his parents, Kurt realized and his heart went out to his boyfriend. All thoughts of visiting his mother were temporarily pushed aside and his focus was one-hundred percent on the upset boy in his arms. “Where are your parents, Blainey?” he asked softly, taking Blaine’s hand in his and squeezing it. “What’s wrong? Do you want to talk about it?”

Blaine really wanted to kiss Kurt back fully, but his dad’s words was still stinging him. He nodded as Kurt said they had to leave before the florist closed. It was only obvious that Kurt wanted to buy flowers to put on his mother’s grave. Blaine was actually more sad about it that he wanted to admit, but as Kurt asked where his parents were, Blaine sighed and sobbed. “Out. They left an hour ago.” He looked up. “I bought my momma flowers, but of course Cooper’s bouquet arrived first. It was a big, big bouquet of red and white roses. Ten minutes later my bouquet arrived. It was ten red tulips.” He looked away. “My dad told me that it was a clear sign that I don’t love my momma as much as Cooper do.. You know how much I love my momma, don’t you Kurt?” Blaine asked with tears in his eyes, threatening to fall every moment. He looked away, ashamed and dried his eyes with the sleeve of his cardigan.

Today was a special day. For Kurt at least. Mother’s Day. Kurt had asked if Blaine wanted to go to the graveyard with him and Blaine hadn’t hesitated with saying yes. He loved Kurt very much and supported him in everything. Blaine couldn’t start to imagine how Kurt felt on this day and any other day really. The only family member Blaine had lost to illness had been a distant uncle, so he really didn’t knew how it felt. Kurt had told him to be ready at a specific time, so Blaine dressed himself in a casual outfit - black skinny jeans, white t-shirt and black bowtie. Over the t-shirt he wore a dark blue cardigan. Seeing it was in the middle of May, he decided not to wear a jacket. Blaine walked outside where he waited for Kurt to arrive.

Kurt did his best to be cheerful during brunch with his family. Things definitely went better than they had the year before when Carole had insisted that Kurt not drive to the restaurant separately, not knowing that Kurt usually spent that particular afternoon in the graveyard with his mother. It wasn’t something that he liked to talk about. This year however, she had been very accommodating when Kurt followed them in his Navigator and didn’t even comment on how overdressed he was for where they were eating. Brunch had been lovely and even Kurt was cheerful throughout their new family tradition. It wasn’t until he was on his way to Blaine’s that he began to feel sad, though it helped that Blaine would be going with him. It was all he could do to keep himself together when he pulled into his boyfriend’s driveway. As he walked up to the front door, he noticed that Blaine’s car was the only one in the driveway. He really hoped that Blaine’s parents hadn’t left him alone again. When he reached the front door, he rang the bell nervously, mumbling, “Hi,” when his boyfriend opened the door.

The Anderson household almost never buzzed with life. That only happened when Cooper was home on one of his yearly visits. Today was no different, Blaine was indeed the black sheep of the family because he was gay. The only one to accept it a little bit was his mom, Irene Anderson. Blaine had always been fond of her, so today he had bought her a small bouquet of flowers, consisting of her favorite flowers. He had been oh-so-proud when the doorbell had rung and he was certain that it was the florist delivering his flowers, instead it was a way bigger, more beautiful bouquet from Cooper. The doorbell had rung ten minutes later and it had been his bouquet - a small bunch of tulips, but it was nothing compared to Cooper’s. Yes, Blaine wanted to like his big brother, but the competition made it difficult. Hugh Anderson, Blaine’s dad had mocked the small bouquet and told Blaine that it wasn’t good enough. “That doesn’t show you love your mother, kid. Why aren’t you more like Cooper?” He had asked with a harsh voice and a deep sigh. Blaine had just shrugged and walked to his room where he had allowed himself to cry a little. He loved his mom, more than anything, but he wasn’t a wealthy actor like Cooper was. After ten minutes of sitting alone, Irene had walked to his room, where she thanked him and held him tight. “Blainey, your dad is taking me out. Is that okay?” Blaine had nodded. “Sure. Kurt asked me if I wanted to go to the graveyard with him. I said yes.” Irene smiled and kissed her son’s forehead. Then she had left the room and left the door halfway open; “Irene, stop babying him! He’s sixteen.” Blaine didn’t heard her answer. After a while the house was quiet and he heard his dad’s car leave the house. Blaine was alone again, but after an hour he heard a knock on the front door and hurried downstairs and opened it and saw Kurt. “Hi, Kurt. Do you wanna come in or are we leaving right away?” He asked. Blaine could see that Kurt was sad, so he tried pulling him in for a big, tight hug.

I’m fine. Mother’s Day is always a bit sad for me, but we’re taking Carole out for lunch, so it’s not completely horrible. How are you, Blaine?

Kurtie… Honey, I’m sorry. I can come over later if you want to cuddle?

I’d love that, Blaine. Every Mother’s Day, I go visit her grave in the afternoon. D-do you want to go with me?

I’d like that. I always wanted to meet your mom. What time do you want me to come over?

C-can I pick you up in about three hours?

Sure, sounds great, baby.

My poor baby

Today must be a really tough day for Kurt. I can’t think about what he must be going through. But as always, he is strong as a rock. He even asked me if I wanted to go to the graveyard with him. Of course I want to. I’ll support him in anything.
